The USSR national team played matches against Finland and Greece on this field in 1978. In 1984, the stadium hosted a solo concert by Alla Pugacheva, which became a significant cultural event.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union, Hrazdan became the main venue for matches of the Armenian national team and a number of clubs, as well as the site of the Armenian Cup finals in the 1990s. In the early 2000s, the stadium was reconstructed, improving spectator comfort with the installation of individual seats, although its capacity was reduced to 55,000.
